In 2001 Karelia Berries launched processing line where we clean berries in production volume. We carefully clean lingonberry and cranberry as long as bilberry, blueberry and other berries. They travel across the conveyor belt where they are winnowed, then the berries are deposited into lotic water from Karelian water-well for cleaning, calibrated against size and sorted by color and form with the help of laser, optic and infrared cameras.

Cooling/Chilling

Pre-cooling (from summer and autumn outdoor temperature +15-+25°С to 0-+2°С) is an important stage before cleaning the berries. The extra moist is removed from the berries’ surface and the berries are collected into lots for further processing. We use powerful chillers that are able to chill up to 250 tons of berries per day.

High-quality cleaning is provided on new production line with a productivity rate of 2 tons per day. The berries travel through system of strainers and grids, and all the small, unripe, overripe berries and stems, leaves, stones etc. are gradually removed as well as the berries that don’t meet the requirements of the standards because of size.

Then any metallic impurities are to be removed with the help of powerful magnets. Then any light waste like leaves or moss is to be winnowed away. We invented and installed some special machines that remove stems of fresh berries on a higher quality level.

Storage and transportation

Storage of clean and packed fresh berries is carried out in freezers at a temperature of 0 – +2°С. The fresh berries are transported by own transport means properly equipped for transportation of fresh berries at a temperature of 0 — +2°С and in accordance with rules of transportation for short-life products.
